Gemini is a American play by Albert Innaurato that became the fourth longest-running non-musical play in Broadway history. Set in the backyard of a blue-collar neighborhood in South Philadelphia early in the summer ofthe comedy-drama focuses on the 21st birthday celebration of Harvard student Francis Geminiani.

The setting of Gemini is the common space between two adjacent backyards in South Philly.

Francis unsuccessfully tries to cover up the neighborhood noise pollution with Maria Callas records. Soon afterward, the soon-to-be birthday boy finds his already tense world disrupted by the surprise arrival of two Ivy League classmates: the well-to-do WASP brother-sister team of Randy and Judith Hastings Zane Michael and Canning Robbrespectively from Boston.

In Innaurato's brand of realism there is little focus on the ordinary. He's interested in the manic, the exaggerated, the bizarre, the absurd. He filters South Philadelphia the way John Waters approaches Baltimore, and then attempts to overlay the kind of wackiness one would associate with his Yale Drama classmate, Chris Durang, with whom he wrote three plays just before, in fact, Gemini.

But the lens Waters uses doesn't depend on hackneyed ethnic stereotypes. Durang is a satirist, Innaurato is not. Francis is not happy to see them, for reasons we won't understand until later. His divorced blue collar father, Fran Joseph Siravofor much the same reasons, is. The Geminiani's are, as the name would suggest, spaghetti-eating Italians, but Bunny Weinberger's genes are booze-swilling Irish, not Jewish.

Her husband, Sam, the Jew, is long gone. Lucille Pompi Julie Boydan Italian widow from the neighborhood who functions as Fran's girlfriend, rounds out the cast. The SCTC audience raking and some blocking did cause visibility problems when action moved from standing to sitting or lying on the floor. The rest of the production team supports this production very well.

Stylish and in some cases right-on period costumes Nicole DeRosa Lukaitis succeed as well as myriad lighting patterns for both inside and outside the houses Andrew Cowles and Joe Scotese. Croce and Reiter worked wonders with the cast. They were comfortable with their characters, and everything they did was believable and even charming. Each character was well defined, but their interactions were sometimes strained; and when a character emulsion was needed to make a point, the audience received discrete performances.

Yet these actors were dealing with a difficult script and a time with which they were not familiar, and what appeared on stage was consistent and reasonable. Oftentimes playing a mentally impaired character can be off-putting to the audience, but Russel does a splendid job in keeping Hershel both charming and irritating in a little brother kind of way.

The societal issues of homosexuality play better now.
