With him came a worldwide reputation for his computerized, muscle-stimulation work with spinal-cord-injury patients at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio. He also had been the subject of a made-for-television movie, received favorable coverage on 60 Minutes, and was all but canonized by hundreds of newspaper and magazine articles that glowingly chronicled his work.
His ties with the university are all but severed. His project to work with paralyzed patients at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Long Beach, Calif, has died for lack of funding. He now is focusing his efforts on research programs at Casa Corazon, a for-profit Laguna Hills, Calif.
