Despite the scandal, she was appointed Deputy President of South Africa by President Thabo Mbeki inbecoming the first woman to hold the position. Inafter Mbeki resigned due to internal party pressure, Mlambo-Ngcuka and the rest of the South African cabinet. Together, they have five children, four of whom are adopted. Their son, Luyolois one of their children.
The family has remained relatively private, but their commitment to social justice and development is evident in their careers. She has authored several scholarly and other opinion pieces, including in the Harvard International Review. Throughout her illustrious career, she directed her energy towards issues of human rights, equality and social justice, with a specific emphasis on gender and youth development.

She was a lecturer at the Mpumalanga Teachers Training College — and thereafter became a teacher at the Ohlange High School — She then moved to Geneva to take up the position as the coordinator at the World YWCA, where she established a global program for young women — Between andMlambo-Ngcuka was a management consultant at Phumelela Services in Cape Town, where she was responsible for promoting race and gender sensitive organisational development, general change management, restructuring of institutions and linking change with productivity.
Mlambo-Ngcuka initially became a member of parliament in chairing the Public Service Portfolio Committee. She was deputy minister in the Department of Trade and Industry from untilduring which time she also was a founding member of the Guguletu Community Development Corporation.
